In memory of Professor Long-Ing Chen, a famous teacher in electronics, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University set up the Electronics Teaching Lecture Foundation.


National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University today established the "Professor Long-Ing Chen Electronics Teaching Lecture" foundation. It is expected to inherit the lifelong teaching enthusiasm of Professor Long-Ing Chen, award two domestic outstanding teachers in electronics teaching every year, and encourage them to cultivate younger students in the field of electronics.


Professor Long-Ing Chen has spent most of his life in teaching and handing down knowledge to the students from generation to generation. Professor Chen, a well-recognized electronics teacher in academia, passed away on December 1, 2020, at the age of 80. After 54 years of spring breeze and rain, he stood in the classroom teaching electronics until the semester before his death, dedicating his life to education. With continuous innovation in the teaching field, Professor Chen cultivates thousands of talents in the electronics industry and semiconductors through classroom teaching, video teaching, and online teaching. Today, Professor Chen's Electronics is still the most respected learning resource for many students.


When teaching, Long-Ing Chen abandoned the stereotyped teaching method and proceeded from the student's standpoint. Over the 54 years, he continuously adjusted the teaching methods to make the students understand the electronics. In an exclusive interview, he said: "Sometimes I come up with better teaching methods, and I feel a little sorry for last year's students because last year's teaching was not good enough." He is an authoritative senior professor at the top of the knowledge hall but shows humility and caring for students, he is indeed a model of a great educator. He will always put students first in his heart. After retirement, he continued to devote himself selflessly to his favorite teaching career, until he finished his last class on June 18, 2020, showing a model of his lifelong career.


The Alumni Association of National Chiao Tung University initiated the project to raise the "Professor Long-Ing Chen Electronics Teaching Lecture and Scholarship Foundation", and established the "Professor Long-Ing Chen Electronics Teaching Lecture". So far, NT$12 million has been raised, which will be used to reward teachers in the field of electronics every year and continue the teaching spirit of Prof. Long-Ing Chen.


Long-Ing Chen is an engineering talent cultivated in Taiwan. After graduating from the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Taiwan University in 1963, he entered Taiwan's first Institute for cultivating electronics professionals, the "Institute of Electronics in National Chiao Tung University", to study for a master’s degree. After obtaining master degree in 1966, he becomes a Lecturer at National Chiao Tung University. In 1968, the Institute of Electronics established a doctoral class, Long-Ing Chen became the first doctoral student and was awarded the "Fulbright Exchange Program Scholarship" to study in the United States. Facilitated and helped by senior Lan Jen Chu, Professor Long-Ing Chen went to Bell Labs in the United States to conduct doctoral dissertation research under the guidance of Dr. Simon Sze and finally obtained his Ph.D. in 1972 and returned to Taiwan to teach at National Chiao Tung University. He has served as the Chairman of the Department of Electronics Engineering, Provost and Vice President of National Chiao Tung University, the Director of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, and the President of National Open University.
