#Abstract
Video establishes the “biggest data” ever seen so far, covering roughly 80% of internet traffic, and requiring huge amount of storage. Furthermore, video data are captured and distributed with higher resolution, as well as capabilities for 3D navigation. Therefore better compression of video data is urgently needed, even though networks will provide higher transmission capacity in the future.
The talk will report about the development of next generation compression standard known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which is intended to provide at least 50% bit rate reduction compared to current standardized technology. The talk will also touch foreseeable trends such as the application of machine learning for compression, and synthesis coding of perceptually equivalent video pictures.
